August was a busy month but the students and staff have done an excellent job!! We are in full swing and daily procedures have been established. As we begin September, our focus is to have all students working on skills needed for a successful future. Grades 3-5 will take the Benchmark Achievement Test (BAT) September 13-16. The results of this test will assist us in targeting individual student skill areas in need of remediation.

If your child is experiencing difficulty in academics and/or social/emotional growth, please contact the teacher to see how he/she can assist. Continuous communication is necessary to ensure each child’s success.

The devoted staff of Davie Elementary School continues to challenge our students to reach new levels. Their professionalism, values, and love for the students is apparent in all they do. How fortunate the parents of our school are to have such a fine group of people working with their children. Our mission is to continue to provide the very best educational environment for our students.

We hope that everyone had an enjoyable and restful summer. The children look great and many have shared their summer activities with us. It is amazing to see how much they have grown in just a few months.

As you may already know, our school has maintained, for a fifth year in a row, an “A” rating from the State of Florida. We are very proud of this “A”commplishment. In addition to Davie’s dedicated staff, our school could not have accomplished this great achievement without our concerned parents and hard-working students. We are looking forward to another successful school year and having the opportunity to work with you once again.

We are looking forward to a successful and exciting year! Our staff and students continue to “try their best” each and every day. If at any time you need to contact us, we may be reached at 754-323-5400.

It is with great pleasure that we extend a hearty congratulations to all of our students, parents and staff for their

Our Tardy Policy

TARDINESS

Davie Elementary is a “BTIP” School (Broward Truancy Intervention Program).

Any child not in his or her room by 8:00 a.m. must be marked tardy. This includes students eating breakfast at the school. Late arrivals must get an admittance slip from the office before going to class. Promptness is a habit that both home and school must encourage.

EVERY EFFORT SHOULD BE MADE TO HAVE YOUR CHILD IN THEIR CLASSROOM ON TIME. Please reinforce this responsibility with your child!

TARDINESS IS NOT FAIR TO THE CHILD

Occasionally, there might be an excuse. A note to the school is required on this occasion.

If a child has a doctor or dentist note, their tardy will be excused.

Each seventh tardy will result in a detention which is served at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday.

As stated in our policy, an unserved detention may prohibit your child from attending a field trip or extracurricular activity.

Attendance

To report an absence for your for your child, call our HOT LINE:

754-323-5400

Florida law requires school attendance for all children grades K-12. The parent is legally responsible for compliance with this law.

Parents have an obligation to keep their children in school and to promptly report and explain any absence in written form to the teacher or principal. Failure to comply carries a penalty. (Florida Law 232.10.232.17) Excessive absences will result in notification to the State Attorney’s Office.

Students will not be dismissed after 1:30 p.m. except in cases of extreme emergencies, as determined by a school administrator.

School Hours at Davie Elementary

Regular Hours:

8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

School is open for student arrival at:

7:15 a.m. For students who are eating breakfast in our

cafeteria (please use the cafeteria entrance).

7:30 a.m. For all other students.

Davie After School Care:

2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

-FDOT Encourages All to be Cautious as Students Return to Class-

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and our Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) partners remind motorists to take extra traffic safety precautions as students head back to school in Broward County Monday, August 23, 2010. The beginning of the school year is a time when children are at increased risk of transportation-related injuries from pedestrian, bicycle, school bus and motor vehicle crashes.

FDOT offers the following tips for making back to school commutes safer for motorists and students.

Tips for Motorists

•	Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits.

•	Be alert for reduced speed limits in designated School Speed Zones.

•	Watch for school buses. Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm indicate the school bus is stopping to load or unload children. Know and follow the state law that requires you to stop. (See info on this link [ http://hsmv.state.fl.us/SafetyTips/SchoolBusSafety.htm ]http://hsmv.state.fl.us/SafetyTips/SchoolBusSafety.htm )

Keep an eye out for children riding their bicycles or walking in the street, especially where there are no sidewalks.

Be alert for children playing and gathering near bus stops and for those who may dart into the street without looking for traffic.

When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch for children walking or biking to school.

When driving in neighborhoods or school zones, watch for young people who may be in a hurry to get to school and may not be thinking about getting there safely.

Tips for Parents

Be a good role model. Always buckle up in the car, always wear a helmet when biking and always follow pedestrian safety rules. Do not text or talk on your cell phone while driving.

Supervise young children as they are walking or biking to school or as they wait at the school bus stop.

Provide your children with bright clothing so motorists can easily see them. Add reflective markings on backpacks.

Make sure your child is properly buckled up in a weight-appropriate child safety seat in the back seat.

Make sure that your teen driver understands and obeys all state traffic laws.

Tips for Students

•	Always buckle up when riding in a car. Be sure to remove your backpack before getting in the vehicle. Never buckle your safety belt with your backpack on.

•	Always ride in the back seat. It’s the safest place for young people.

•	Always wear a helmet and follow traffic safety rules when riding your bike.

•	If you ride a school bus, learn and practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. Never wait for the school bus in the roadway.

•	If you walk to school, learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians. It’s extremely important for you to use the sidewalk when available, look left-right-left when crossing the road, and always walk facing traffic.

Always cross at crosswalks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and crossing guard instructions.

Teen drivers should avoid speeding and minimize distractions (texting, talking on cell phones, eating, adjusting the radio) while driving. Teens are also reminded never to overload their vehicle; everyone riding in a vehicle must use a safety belt.

Be a good role model for your younger brothers and sisters and friends, and help them learn and follow vehicle safety rules.
